Humans of Lazada: A Graffiti Artist Draws Upon His Curiosity

Our “Humans of Lazada” series takes a look at the professional and personal lives of more than 9,000 people who work at Lazada. Click here for more stories from this series.

“I’ve always been a very curious person who seeks out new experiences. This quality is something I attribute to my parents, who often encouraged me to do things I liked and had a passion for.

More than half a year ago, I came across graffiti while browsing the internet and was immediately taken by how free and expressive it was as an art form. After doing some research on the history and techniques of graffiti, I bought the tools needed and started working on my first piece of graffiti art. I spray painted the word ‘BOXN,’ which stands for Boxian, my nickname at Lazada. Because of my inexperience, the paint dripped down and made the image look dirty. But after days of practice, I was finally satisfied with how the end product turned out.

It might seem easy to just spray paint over a background. But it’s only when you pick up the tools that you understand how much effort it takes to really create something amazing when it comes to graffiti. You need to duplicate symbols from paper to a huge canvas. And when spraying the paint, you need to flow the lines as smoothly as possible.

Graffiti is still not widely accepted in most cities across the world. A form of street art, it’s usually seen as a sign of rebellion. Some people even view it as vandalism of the cityscape and environment. As far as I can tell, there are less than 100 artists who can make a living from just creating graffiti in China.

As an amateur graffiti artist, I hope to have more opportunities to practice and showcase my work. During this year’s Lazada Family Day on May 10, the organizational culture team from Lazada China invited me to design a piece of graffiti for our event’s key visual. To me, Lazada’s heartgram logo means warmth and color, and our mascot, Lazzie, is a symbol of cuteness and vitality. I combined all these elements together to create a round and shiny font that looked like fruit jelly.

To me, graffiti reflects my pursuit of new experiences and my passion for experimentation. From time to time I ponder the meaning of life, and I’ve come to this conclusion: do whatever makes you feel fulfilled and content, and follow your heart.”
