“My career journey has definitely not been the most conventional one – having transitioned from a chief financial officer to a chief marketing officer in less than two years of joining Lazada – but you’d be surprised how much these two roles complement each other! In fact, having a background in finance greatly helped me and the team to optimize our performance marketing budget and improve our spending efficiency.
Currently, I am the chief business officer of Lazada Thailand, where I am able to leverage both my background in finance and marketing to adopt a holistic viewpoint in making commercial decisions. In order to grow your brand, you must understand your target audiences, create brand awareness, acquire customers, drive repeat buyers and, at the same time, keep your business growing sustainably with a robust P&L that works for all parties. Every day, we have to identify a win-win solution for each brand while maintaining LazMall’s number one position in a very competitive market.
A lot of people ask me how I was able to transition so quickly between the different roles. It was definitely a challenge. Thankfully, in both transitions, I had great teams who were so patient and understanding. They were willing to teach me all aspects of marketing and commercial and spend late nights with me to get me up to speed – most Lazadians are ready to extend helping hands. It is in our DNA.
In this spirit, I’ve always felt a great sense of achievement when I can nurture different teams into the next generation of leaders. I am a firm believer that success comes when you have a good team to work alongside you and that everyone supports each other to achieve the same goals. So, for over five years at Lazada, I have always been focusing on people and creating a better work environment for the team. As a female leader especially, I am thankful the company creates a favorable environment for women to have equal opportunities to rise to leadership roles – just like I did.
To all women who want to grow their career in any business field, you should believe that you can do anything as long as you put your mind to it. Most importantly, be open-minded, ask lots of questions and learn from others, especially the younger generations who grew up in the digital era, and have the courage to seize new opportunities. I am inspired by the people I work and cross paths with, and I learn from them to become a better person. My role models are those in leadership teams who emphasize generosity and a strong work ethic, as well as junior staffs in the team who take pride in starting things with a good attitude.
Outside of work, I enjoy running every morning to clear my mind from all other distractions. It also gives me an uninterrupted space to bring mental clarity to the choices and decisions I need to make at work while also helping me stay physically healthy. Training and completing full marathons have also changed my outlook and attitude on life. The experience trained me to be disciplined, taught me that it is okay to go at my own pace and mentally prepared me to not give up. Whenever I cross the finish line, I feel a great sense of satisfaction. If I can run 42km, I can do anything.”
